Creating a Paid Registration
A paid registration is a sign-up where at least one registration type has a price above $0, so participants pay by card when they reserve a spot. You build it exactly like a free registration, then set a price on each registration type instead of leaving it at zero.
How is a paid registration different from a free one?
The setup is identical up to pricing. You create the registration, choose whether it is a standard or season registration, set the registration window and capacity, and optionally attach a custom intake form. The only difference is that you give one or more registration types a price. A registration can mix free and paid types in the same sign-up.
If you have not created a registration before, start with Creating a Free Registration for the full walkthrough of kinds, windows, and capacity, then return here for the pricing steps.
How do you set a price?
- Create the registration and open the registration details editor.
- In the Registration types section, add at least one type and give it a title (for example, "Player" or "Early bird").
- In the Price field for that type, enter the amount you want to charge. The field is prefixed with a dollar sign.
- Repeat for any additional types that should have their own price.
A paid type must be at least $1.00. If you enter an amount between $0 and $1, it is rounded up to $1.00. To keep a type free, leave its price at $0 — free and paid types can coexist in the same registration.
Everything else works the same as a free registration: set the overall Capacity, set the Opens date (and optional close date), and add a custom form if you need extra information at sign-up.
What does the participant see at checkout?
On the public registration page, participants pick a registration type and quantity, complete any custom form you attached, and then reach a payment step. There they can:
- Pay with a credit or debit card, or
- Use an express payment option such as Apple Pay or Google Pay when their device supports it.
If they select only free ($0) types, no payment is required — they simply enter their name and email to reserve the spot. After a successful payment, they land on a confirmation page and receive an emailed receipt.
How do processing fees work?
Card payments carry a processing fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. Who covers that fee depends on a single organization-wide setting that applies to all of your registrations:
- Organization pays (the default) — the fee is deducted from your payout, and the participant pays only the registration price.
- Participant pays — the fee is added on top of the price at checkout, so your payout equals the full registration price.
- Participant chooses — the participant sees a checkbox at checkout to cover the fee. If they leave it checked, they cover it; if they uncheck it, your organization does.
Because this is an organization-wide setting, you do not choose it per registration. If you want to change how fees are handled, update your organization's payment settings.
Publishing and sharing
Publishing rules are the same as a free registration: the registration needs a title, at least one registration type, a capacity greater than 0, and an open date before you can publish. Once published, the Publish button becomes Share so you can distribute the link. Capacity limits and the built-in waitlist behave identically whether the registration is free or paid — see Managing Waitlists and Attendance.
